Current and recent work.

Architecture and its place in the landscape is the catalyst for most of my work. More often than not I am especially drawn towards concrete, industrial or military structures and particularly those in a state of decay brought about either through abandonment or just general wear and tear. I am attempting to translate my personal response to these structures into two-dimensional works using composition, colour and texture, to describe or suggest architectural forms and the effects of constant exposure to the elements and passage of time.

Notes on technique.

For me, the actual process of painting is more than just a means to an end. I think of the whole painting as a solid object in its own right. This means the piece of canvas is not just an inert surface on which to describe an image but fully integral to the finished piece. Although I work primarily through trial and error, my starting point is generally to first cut canvas to the desired shape to which I then start to apply numerous, thin layers of paint. I mostly work with the painting on the floor as I find this affords me more freedom of movement and can work from every side. Working this way also allows me to pour and run the paint over the surface or let it collect in pools. Furthermore, this technique also gives me the option of folding the painting over on itself to dry or turning it over completely in order to dry face down which I can then peel off the floor. By doing this I can deliniate different areas without actually painting edges as such which I think gives the painting greater depth. Shrinkage and slight changing of shape is also another interesting feature of working with unstretched canvas. The cumulative results of succesive paint layers and the drying/evaporation process often results in intricate and curious paint effects, patterns and textures.
